My career as a Graphic Designer began by accident. I majored in Studio Art at Humboldt State University in Northern California and balanced my studies with History and Geography. I dreamt of a bohemian life, traveling the world with a sketch pad and camera.
Midway through my studies, I realized I would have to work for a living. I decided to do my emphasis in Graphic Design. I landed my first gig at a Napa Valley company that etched and screen printed wine bottles. I worked at Bergin Glass for 5 years, where I learned about package design for the wine industry. Eventually, I became the Art Director and built a client list of up and coming wine makers.
In 2006, I had the opportunity to move to New York City and serve as the Art Director for a startup design firm. As a founding member of Hydra Media Group, I ran the studio, hired talent and worked with diverse clients in wine, transportation and construction industries. After 2 years, Hydra restructured and I decided to freelance.
My creative approach to solving a design problem is two fold. First, understand the problem by listening to the client's needs and expectations. I ask questions, then apply the appropriate tools for the job. A graphic design solution may incorporate photography, illustration, typography or a combination of all three.
After the initial meeting, I create a series of refined compositions for presentation. I then narrow the field to a solution that works best—one that clearly communicates the message of the client to the target audience and leaves a lasting impression.
